People who are MISERABLE are hard to be around because they are in a pitiable state of distress and unhappiness, and sometimes can even be distressed, destitute and just plain mean.
Pain and suffering are inevitable in all of our lives, but choosing misery instead of a growth mindset is an option. All too often, people who are suffering seek out and are comforted by the knowledge that others are also unhappy and they sit around and commiserate in a state of misery about their suffering – we call it “pity parties”.
On teams, we all love and require healthy doses of attention – everybody has value. Our smiles are incredible powerful nonverbal tools. Smiling and laughing are contagious, especially around people who are gloomy. Don’t meet grumpiness with grumpiness. Acts of kindness rarely go unnoticed. Start a dialogue with those who are gloomy and encourage them to SEE a different perspective rather than misery; but no matter what they choose, do not let the miserable ADD TO THEIR COMPANY!
